Gold Coast Airport
With the sixth-busiest runways in the country, the Gold Coast Airport is the gateway to the surfing beaches of eastern Australia. The facility, formerly called the Coolangatta Airport, is 100km south of Brisbane.
Travellers should be aware that the airport sits on the border of New South Wales and Queensland, which are in different time zones. Flight schedules reflect Queensland time. Airlines providing service to this destination include Virgin Australia, Qantas, Tigerair, Jetstar Airways, Air New Zealand, Scoot, Seair Pacific and Hong Kong Airlines.
A $300 million improvement project in 2016 created a three-tiered terminal with four aerobridges. The airport offers a pair of lounges, operated by Virgin Australia and Qantas, to business-class passengers and frequent flyers. An interesting feature is a 334-metre tunnel under the runway, part of the 7.5km Tugun Bypass that provides a high-speed link with northern New South Wales.
Getting to the airport can involve a picturesque drive on the Gold Coast Highway or the Pacific Motorway from Brisbane. The roads pass through many sites that are popular with tourists and holiday travellers. GoCards costing up to $200, depending upon the trip, are needed to ride TransLink buses that link all the major destinations in the region. Shuttle buses with free Wi-Fi provide transportation from the airport to more than 400 hotels on the Gold Coast. Ticket prices for rides start at $21.
The lodging options closest to the airport are the LaCosta Motel, one-third of a mile away; the Iconic Kirra Beach Resort, nine-tenths of a mile; the Oceanside Resort, one mile; and the Best Western Motel, 1.5 miles.
